We are a busy, energetic Society and are always in need of more help from our members.   There are many different ways you can help – either ‘as-and-when’ or on  a more involved ‘ongoing’ basis

How you can help

lead our

Environment Groups

The Society’s Environment & Travel Behaviour Groups are just 5 years old, yet have done important work in seeking to make Oxford’s streets and public spaces pleasant and agreeable places for everyone’s safe enjoyment.  Their various projects have involved working closely with City & County Council, and also independently.  We now need a new Environment Sec to champion this agenda. Could that be you?

tell us about your local Area Committee

The 6 local Area Committee meetings held across the city each month offer an important opportunity to find out exactly what is happening or planned in your area, as your local councillors discuss the neighbourhood issues publicly.  You can also raise your own concerns there. If you think you might be able to attend your local meeting from time to time, and report back to us, please get in touch.

OxClean Chairperson

Now in its fourth year, OxClean has won plenty of recognition.  A new Chairperson is required by the autumn of this year, to help us build on the successes we have achieved and to move forward with DON’T DROP IT!, Spring Clean 2011 and our Schools’ Anti-Litter campaigns. Please let us know if we can tell you more of this exciting opportunity.

OxClean and Language Schools’

liaison

OxClean has established a very strong Schools’ Anti-Litter Campaign in primary and secondary schools across the city.  A number of schools visitors play a vital part in the success of this programme.  We need two or more people to share the task of visiting Language Schools, if we are to maintain our cordial relationship with them whilst encouraging the responsible disposal of litter in and around each site. Do you think you could help?

Newsletter Editor

The Society’s newsletter reaches every member, either electronically or as hard copy, in March, July and November each year.  It is highly valued by the readership of over 1,000.  From March 2011 we seek a new editor to plan each issue, collate the copy and submit print-ready files to the printer who handles the onward distribution mailings for us. Might you enjoy this role?

“front of house” small team for our open meetings

The Society’s programme of events is always popular.  The Programme Group needs help in the form of a small team who would be responsible for setting up our display stand and materials, meeting and greeting those attending, distributing flyers, notices, etc.  Could you take a lead role in organising a team of helpers, making this happen smoothly as a welcome preliminary to each event?

refreshments

at meetings

Our talks are held on a weekday.  Tea and coffee served at the beginning of the evening is always much appreciated and offers a very welcome opportunity for everyone to meet and chat informally before the formalities.  We need someone to organise this for our various helpers.  Please put your name forward if you would like to be involved.

Museum

of Oxford

volunteer

Given stringent cuts in the Museum’s operating budget, a radical overhaul of service structure is in hand.  The Society’s Volunteer Network, providing visitor and administrative services on a day to day basis, is proving itself an important part of the Museum’s function during this transitional period.  Can you give ½ a day or more per week, even just occasionally, to work at the Museum?

supplying photographs

We are always looking for photographs to include on our website pages, news releases and other publicity material.  We also maintain a gallery on our website. If you have any suitable digital images for us, please email up to 4 at a time (preferably captioned) to webman@oxfordcivicsoc.org.uk

help compile a unique, living history of today’s

Covered Market traders

In a unique collaboration, made possible by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Oxford Muse is working with the Oxfordshire Town Chambers Network (OTCN) and the Oxford Civic Society to tell the fascinating stories of the people behind Oxford's Covered Market. The aim is to celebrate the independent traders who keep the market alive as a vibrant and valuable city centre experience; to arouse interest; and to develop a greater appreciation of their work and talents. The result, when published, will attract more people to visit, and appreciate, Oxford’s Covered Market.
