In April 2000 a conference was held in Oxford which brought together both planners and consumers, experts and those representing many diverse interests deeply affected by transport in the city and more widely.
The development of what became the Oxford Transport Strategy has had a long history. During this time the attitude to car transport and road building has been radically re-thought. At the same time public transport has had to be made not just a viable alternative but an attractive one to users.
First results of the strategy show that an increasing number of people are coming to the city: shoppers, visitors to the superb cultural attractions, all who enjoy this ancient city in an increasingly fume-free and traffic-free environment.
There is still much to be done, and some of the plans and ideas are shown in this book. There is still much to be learned: and the book gives a platform, as the conference did, to those of varying views. The result is a book which will inform public debate and be a case-study for all those concerned for the urban environment in ancient cities.
"The subject of this book is currently under fierce debate in the city. It is also an issue of wide importance. The lessons being learned in Oxford are of relevance wherever schemes for disciplining traffic are being promoted. The remarkable thing about the Oxford meeting was the degree of consensus reached, despite the fact that the participants represented many diverse interests in the city."
His Honour Sir Stephen Tumim
Past President, Oxford Civic Society
"This book brings together material from a highly strategic conference. It shows me just how much common ground there is between those who see themselves either as advocates or as opponents of the Oxford Transport Strategy, both in what has been done and what ought to be done.
The way forward is to continue the debate, and at the same time for the authorities to make the practical improvements needed as soon as possible.
Publication of this book will encourage this process. The Oxford Civic Society has done well both to organize the conference and to publish its substance so handsomely and speedily."
Hugo Brunner
Lord Lieutenant of the County of Oxfordshire
