Travel
|
Travel behaviour – how we move into and around Oxford – has a fundamental impact on the environment of the city. Our Travel Behaviour Group concentrates on personal travel with particular emphasis on walking, cycling and public transport. Our aim is to identify opportunities for travel behaviour which produce social, environmental and sustainable benefits. |

Transform Oxford
|
Whilst welcoming the ‘Transform Oxford’ initiative to improve the environment of the city centre, the competing demands of better bus access and connectivity, the interests of pedestrians, cyclists, the disabled, the very young and the elderly pose huge problems.
We examine all proposals and maintain a continuing dialogue with the County planners. See

Local Transport Plan 3
The Society has participated fully in helping frame the next Local Transport Plan, which will define county transport policy for two decades ahead from 2011. See our Response to LTP3 Draft Policies. The next stage of consultations, on investment scenarios, will take place shortly, and we will participate in helping determine the best scenarios for investment in Oxford's travel and transport. |
Public Transport
Our Transport Sub-Committee scrutinises all local public transport arrangements – timetables, routes
and bus stops – and makes constructive suggestions as to how these might be improved for the travelling public.
Rail Services
We have responded to consultations on a number of rail proposals affecting the rail station, where demand
is expected to grow, adding to the difficulties already experienced on the journey to and from the train.
Our response to the Oxford Station Masterplan has stressed the need to deal with traveller congestion issues
outside the station as well as on the railway. The finalised Masterplan has now been published. Network Rail has also produced its Great Western Route Utilisation Strategy which advocates further enlargement of Oxford station. The Society will participate in consultations on that when they arise.
Bus Connectivity
A survey of members’ experiences of getting about Oxford identified a number of gaps in timetabling which resulted in poor connectivity or too many changes needed. Recommendations from our resulting Bus Connectivity Review included better coordination of city services, and the two principle operators have agreed with the county council to implement this. |
