Environment

Our Environment Group is dedicated to improving the quality of the city’s environment.  We want to establish our streets and public spaces as places for the safe enjoyment of the people.

 OxClean

We launched OxClean in 2008.  This campaign aims to clean up Oxford and keep the city clean all year round. We co-ordinate an annual city-wide Spring Clean, which now includes a successful River Week event; we maintain a year-round Schools’ Anti-Litter Campaign and education programme, and drive an ongoing Don't Drop It campaign aimed at reducing litter caused by on-the-go eating and drinking and cigarette butts.  Car litter is a major problem especially around the ring road.  We encourage Oxford citizens to report incidents of people littering from their cars and other vehicles to the Keep Britain Tidy Car Litter Campaign.

 Oxford Streets for People

St Leonards 2009croppedphoto 4.JPG

Our aim is to remind people that streets are valuable social spaces for all to use and enjoy - thereby, making our streets friendlier, more pleasant and safer. The focus of our activity
is the promotion of an annual
Street Parties weekend where people get to know their neighbours better. This will be held on the 18 and 19 September in 2010. For a selection of short themed, city centre 'walkabouts' celebrating our fascinating streets visit Walk & Talk. For more information about other activities please visit oxstreets.org.uk

 Decluttering Public Spaces

As part of our campaign to declutter the city’s streets we published a report Signage in Central Oxford. We welcome the significant changes already made (see Carfax, before and after, left) but continue to press for more to be done to remove unnecessary clutter (see right).

 About Us

Our approach is pro-active, informative and educative. We place a great deal of emphasis on innovative thinking and creativity. We believe that the best way forward is to work closely with all city communities – citizens, City and County Council, city centre management and businesses.

Your Input

We are always interested to hear your views about problems you encounter and ideas you have to improve Oxford’s environment.  We would welcome volunteers to join us and help with our campaigns.  Please email us at environment@oxfordcivicsoc.org.uk or write to Oxford Civic Society, Environment Group, 67 Cunliffe Close, Oxford, OX2 7BJ
