The Oxford Civic Society is a citizens’ membership group concerned with the quality of Oxford’s built environment and its impact on people’s daily lives. Our threefold priority is to protect Oxford’s heritage, appreciate today’s city and shape its future.

Planning, Environment, and Travel are central to the concerns and activities of the Society.

We co-ordinate OxClean and promote Oxford Streets for People in partnership with Oxford City Council.  We are working closely with the Museum of Oxford and are involved with the running of the Blue Plaques scheme

Committed to a Clean Oxford

This initiative is dedicated to cleaning up Oxford and keeping the city clean and tidy all year round.  Spring Clean 2010 will take place on 5 & 6 March when Residents’ Associations, Community Groups, Schools and Businesses will again clean up across the city.

Friendlier streets – safer and more pleasant

This campaign aims to remind people that streets are valuable social spaces for all to use and enjoy.  Two events were planned: Street Parties was held in September.  Oxford Walk & Talk  - a series of daily, themed walks - was launched as part of the campaign.

Why not volunteer to help The Museum of Oxford?

We are actively involved in developing the strategy for a viable and dynamic Museum of the future.  Cuts in the operating budget, necessitate a radical overhaul of service and structure.  We launched and set up aVolunteer Network to help provide visitor and administrative services.

Commemorating notable people and sites

1999 saw the founding of Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Board to commemorate notable persons and sites of historic interest. Oxford Civic Society has been closely involved and assists with administrative costs.  Over 50 plaques have been unveiled, so far

We actively encourage an awareness and understanding of our city through a year-round Programme of talks, walks and visits.  Our talks (free to members) are given by leading speakers and are held in interesting locations across Oxford. A wide variety of subjects are covered – eg Oxford history, buildings, current developments, arts and science.  Our extensive programme of visits and walks (members only and usually for a small charge) is led by local experts and held both in and out of Oxford.

Our Newsletters – published in March, July and November each year – inform and update our members about current developments and issues.  We also commission a series of original cards, Christmas cards and year-round notelets – which feature Oxford scenes and events. We compile Publications that contribute to the planning of the city’s future.

About Us
We are a registered charity and are actively contributing – both ideas and finance – to the Civic Society Initiative

The work of the Society is currently divided into an Executive Committee and various Sub-committees: Planning, Environment, Travel, Communications, Membership and Programme.  The structure and working of the Society is defined in Constitution (June 2006).  Information about our current structure, activities and finances is detailed in 2009 AGM Reports.
